The Chives, Allium schoenoprasum , is one of the important fresh herbs in terms of popularity and market value. This unique herb is a member of the Liliaceae Family and it is a native of Europe and Asia. Chives can be used as culinary and medically and as fresh or dried. Chives can be grown as annual or perennial.

 

Chives grow best in full sun. But for better quality yield in commercially fields the Chives is grown in shade houses or greenhouse and most common in tunnels covered with polyethylene for winter and in summer with shade net Black 40% or 50%. Another way of growing is under Anti Insect 50 mesh to protect the Chives from insects. Thrips is an important insect in this crop that is very difficult to control. Chives grown under different covers in Israel, Spain, South Africa, Morocco and worldwide.

 

Chive can grow in different temperature from 4.5°C to 35°C, but optimal temperature is 21°C. Chives can tolerate frost.
